Welcome to the Amico Senior Center Blog

Amico Senior Center is a high energy packed center with a diverse community comprised of over 7,000 members who speak over 4 different languages.  It was established in 1979 to eradicate false perceptions of the Italian American Community in Brooklyn, New York. During the late 1970s Borough Park was a predominately Italian Immigrant/ Italian American neighborhood and its residents of Italian ancestry were stereotyped.  Amico's Principles were established as a reaction to end the vilification of Brooklyn's Italian Community and also to foster a sense of pride in Italian cultural heritage.  Since inception, Amico which means friend in Italian has been embracing all members of the Brooklyn Community regardless of race, gender, social economic class and sexual orientation.
During weekdays an average of 200 seniors convene together for nutritious meals, cultural activities and the chance to keep in contact with friends. Some volunteer at the center and answer phones, serve meals and help to maintain the daily functions of the center.  Independence and respect have been at the forefront of Amico’s commitment to the its senior population.  Meaningful connections combat inevitable insolation due to loss of family members and friends and the endurement of medical illnesses.
Friendships and socialization help members of the community feel happy and have a place to call their own. Socialization helps to bring seniors out of isolation which helps them to ultimately lead healthier and longer lives. Cultural activities, holiday celebrations and birthdays at the center foster cultural exchanges which further enhance social connectedness at the center.
The Amici Senior Center is partially funded by the New York City Department for the Aging, which provides services for seniors throughout the New York City area.
